If you have ever been declined for health insurance you know what it's like to be "left out in the cold".  Defenseless against the possibility of future medical claims.  In Florida if you are self employed you are guaranteed coverage. Great news, but there are catches.  The biggest one is that there is only one open enrollment period each year, August with a October 1st effective date.  The other issue is cost. These plans like other employer plans don't come cheaply and if your timing is off (for example it's November) you could be waiting a long time without health insurance.

These plans have many positive aspects not the least of which is limited underwriting compared to an individual plan, and the fact they are issued almost the same day as applied for.  To see if you qualify here are the Underwriting questions of a typical plan.

  1. Are you pregnant or anyone in your family?

  2. Within the last 5 years have you or any dependent to be insured been hospital confined for any reason (other then bodily injury for four consecutive days or longer?

  3. With the last 5 years have you or any dependent seen or been treated by any medical professional or been recommended to see a professional, or received diagnostic treatment or received medication, or received abnormal test results for any of the following conditions?

    • Alcohol abuse

    • Cancer or tumor (excluding basal cell)

    • COPD, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, pulmonary embolism, or tuberculosis

    • Diabetes

    • Organ or tissue transplants

    • blood disorder

    • heart disorder - including but not limited to chest pain, heart failure, rhythm disturbance or heart attack

    • Circulatory system disorder - including but not limited to deep vein thrombosis

    • Kidney or liver disorder

    • Nervous system disorder

    • Mental/Nervous disorder requiring hospitalization

  4. Within the last 5 years have you had H.I.V.?

  5. Do you have high blood pressure or cholesterol (whether or not treated or controlled) AND weigh more then 300 pounds if male and 250 pounds if female?

  6. Within the last 12 months have you been advised by any medical professional to have any test, medical treatment or surgery not completed?
