Florida Maternity Insurance Choices

There are no stand-alone maternity insurance plans available at this time in Florida. If you already pregnant and without health insurance, you will not be able to nor will anyone in your family be able to qualify for an individual Florida health insurance plan. Sorry, it's crazy but that's just the way it is in Florida.  There are supplemental plans with no waiting periods that will cover the majority of the prenatal, birth and post natal expenses. And there are optional riders which may be purchased along with a standard Florida health insurance plan. There are also companies that will negotiate on your behalf and get you discounts of approximately 50% for a monthly fee.

Already Pregnant? Click here, we have a special program that will save you a ton of time and money.

Maternity insurance on Florida individual health insurance plans do not work the same way as on an Employer Health Insurance Plan where they are covered as any other illness. The best way to get coverage for a pregnancy is to arrange for coverage prior to becoming pregnant. Once you are pregnant it is to late to get maternity insurance as a separate option on a Florida health insurance plan. Most maternity plans appear as Optional Riders with separate deductibles and no limits on how much the plan will pay for the pregnancy. Coverage for delivery by C-Section is covered under the base policy as a complication of pregnancy. If a woman has had a prior C-section an Exclusionary Rider is placed on the policy whereby additional C-Section deliveries are not covered.

Most maternity insurance Riders share several features in common among them the following:

  1. When a maternity Rider is placed on a policy the benefits are stepped...conception must be delayed anywhere from 3 months to 15 months after the Rider is purchased. If the waiting periods are not adhered to benefits can be eliminated or reduced in half.

  2. We do offer a Supplemental Health Insurance Plan with no waiting periods that treats pregnancy as any other illness so long as the pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition prior to taking the coverage. (Receive up to $3,000 for hospitalization; $75 physician visit benefit;  plus $500 each day in the hospital). The cost is based on your age as well as the level of benefits desired.

  3. The cost for these Riders can add anywhere from $100 to $225 to your monthly insurance premium depending on the company. They recover some of their costs in the additional premium they charge you during the waiting period.

  4. Not all companies will allow you to add this benefit once the insurance has been issued so it pays to plan. This is not considered insurance, but we refer to it here as such since that is the search phrase most people use to get information on the topic.

If you are looking to add a Maternity Rider to a traditional PPO Health Insurance Plan or Missouri health insurance plan and want the BEST coverage then continue reading...

Note: This plan has a 3 month wait before you can become pregnant...yes,  if you elect this optional coverage and conception occurs before a full THREE months have passed then no benefits will be paid in connection with your maternity.

Its' a traditional, comprehensive, major medical, Florida health insurance plan, covering such things as doctor office visits, prescriptions and of course hospitalization. This is not a defined benefit plan, it's actual health insurance. There is a deductible with a choice of $1000 and higher but we have found the $2500 deductible to be the most cost effective. This means that your total out of pocket expense to have a baby is $2,500. They pay the rest. You can get lower deductibles. The maternity portion must be taken when you sign up for the plan and is only available with the base health insurance coverage. But it is without a doubt the best maternity insurance available in Florida today.

After the baby is born, you can drop the maternity rider.

Alternatives: If You're Already Pregnant you won't qualify for a Florida health insurance plan. Read below how to get maternity coverage.

If you are not covered by Florida health insurance already and are pregnant then you need to switch to "Plan B".  Hospitals are used to giving considerable discounts for cash payment in advance or according to a payment plan.  Most obstetricians have a discounted rate as well if you are paid up by a certain date, typically up to a 60% discount. This is not altogether unlike the hefty discounts you will receive if you pay cash in advance for many other unrelated medical procedures.  You can negotiate these rates for yourself or have a national company do it for you that has helped thousands of pregnant mothers in the exact same situation as you are. So, if you are already pregnant, and would like to see what the cost and benefits would be to have someone drastically lower your costs for the pregnancy then click here for maternity benefits.
